Our Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) and Animal Health Technologists (AHT):
Karen Sumner, AHT,
I graduated as a 'Veterinary Nurse' in England in 1992 from the Royal College of Veterinary Nurses in London. I worked for a veterinary charity in Yorkshire England for 10 years and another veterinary clinic for 7 years. I came to Canada in December 2006, with 5 dogs and a cat, most of whom had come home from the vets 'for the weekend' at some point in my career and never got round to going back. Before my employment with BorderVet I worked with 100% small animals so it was a bit of a shock trying to adjust to cattle and large animal work. I am now living on a farm with 54 cows, 2 horses, 4 dogs, 4 barn cats and a house cat, so am getting used to the variety!
I studied at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta and graduated in June 2016 with distinction. I started working at BorderVET during the summer between my first and second year of college and then officially began working as a Registered Veterinary Technician in May of 2016. I grew up on a farm just outside of Carnduff and I still reside there to this day with my parents and older brother. We have a mixed farm with 300 cows and around 1300 acres of grain land. We also have many horses, goats, cats, one miniature pony, one miniature donkey, one pot bellied pig, and 5 dogs. I recently rescued my dog Jessy, a blue heeler, and bought an Australian Shepherd puppy, Hershey. The other dogs on the farm include Jess (Border Collie X Lab), Amos (Pug), and Chopper (Great Pyrenees).
